About the Event

Designed for emerging documentary directors, DOCVillage combines workshops, coaching sessions, masterclasses, screenings, and networking opportunities into an immersive residency experience. The initiative aims to help filmmakers refine their ideas, strengthen their artistic voice, and connect with a broader European filmmaking community.

A Residency Focused on Creative Documentary Storytelling

The residency is intended for directors developing a new short documentary project that is still in the creative development or early pre-production phase. Participants will work closely with established documentary professionals including John Appel, Martijn Blekendaal, and Astrid Bussink, who will guide the selected filmmakers through practical sessions on research, observation, storytelling, interviews, and directorial vision.

The program also includes access to the wider DOCDAYS 2026 activities, with screenings, networking dinners, and community events woven into the residency schedule. Sessions will be conducted entirely in English.

Who Can Apply?

DOCVillage is aimed at early-career filmmakers who already have some directing experience. Applicants must have directed at least one short documentary, but no more than three. Feature documentary projects are not eligible, and each filmmaker may submit only one project.

The organizers are particularly interested in filmmakers with strong creative visions who are looking to deepen both their storytelling craft and professional network.

Funding and Participation

Only twelve filmmakers will be selected for the residency. Several places are sponsored through the Screen Talent Europe network, including filmmakers connected to participating regional film workshops such as Film Workshop Aarhus in Denmark. For sponsored participants, travel, accommodation, meals, and workshop costs are fully covered.

Filmmakers who are not affiliated with a partner organization may still apply independently. In those cases, the participation fee after selection is €1000 excluding VAT.

Application Materials and Deadline

Applicants must submit a pitch dossier of up to five pages in PDF format. The application package can include:

* A tagline, logline, and synopsis
* A motivation letter
* A director’s vision statement
* CVs of the creative team
* Moodboards or links to previous work

Submissions can be made in Danish or English for applicants connected to Film Workshop Aarhus, although selected projects will later need English translations if initially submitted in another language.

The application deadline is 15 July 2026 at 12:00 PM, with selected participants announced on 28 July 2026.

A Growing European Network for Emerging Filmmakers

DOCVillage forms part of a broader ecosystem of talent-development initiatives supported by Screen Talent Europe and regional film workshops across the continent. Similar programs such as Directors Village and KORTFILM26 have helped emerging filmmakers build projects that later reached major festivals and professional funding schemes.

For documentary filmmakers looking to expand their craft, test ideas in an international environment, and connect with peers and mentors, DOCVillage 2026 presents a rare and focused opportunity.
